8 days, 7 nights price on request
Wandering about Jewish heritage in Italy? This tour will lead you through the main Italian cities, where the Jewish presence has been very important for its cultural and economical support.
In Rome, the eternal city, you will pass through the streets of the Jewish ghetto, the living place of the only Jewish community which has always been present in the same place before the Diaspora, and you will discover Jewish traces hidden in the historical monuments of the city.
Pitigliano, known as the "Little Jerusalem", is one of the rare cities in Italy, where the enclosure in the ghetto did not stop relations between Jews and the local population. You will be astonished by the beauty of its landscape and its medieval centre with narrow streets, and you will be surrounded by the flavour of the famous wine "Bianco di Pitigliano".
In Florence, the wonderful city of arts, you will have the opportunity to visit the magnificent Synagogue in Moorish style and the Jewish cemetery with funerary monuments designed by artist, but you will also walk among the beautiful monuments and buildings that made the history of Florence... and of course a stroll on the famous Ponte Vecchio.
If you have never been in Bologna, you will be surprised by the cultural richness of this city. The guided tour will escort you along the streets of the Jewish quarter, discovering the many Jewish traces hidden behind a memorial plaque or an inscription, but also in the many documents preserved in specific museums and libraries. A traditional meal with the famous "tortellini bolognesi" will satisfy your appetite.
After Bologna you will visit the dreaming Venice, the city were the word "ghetto" was used for the first time (it comes from the Venetian word "geto" indicating the foundry). You will see the interesting synagogues built in private houses, but also the artistic heritage that this city "on the water" has preserved for many centuries.
The tour will end in Trieste, where Italian, Austrian, Slovenian and Hungarian cultures mixed for ages. You can still feel its multicultural atmosphere in architecture, in the local traditions and of course in the variety of food, that you will taste by yourself. Trieste has been an important centre for the Jewish Community, as some of its members founded the first insurance companies (such as Generali) and were considered to be among the leading intellectuals.
